"My neighbors here in this working class part of Buffalo, Black Rock, may some of them know I'm a poet, but it's the neighborhood which most defines us. What I can make clear is that I am not here in Black Rock to soak up that culture, etc. It's simply where I feel at home and where we live and have raised our son and daughter". I definitely put up a vote for adding "historic" to the new sign.
A witness told my daughter that the wreck started with this truck coming off the 190 and running the red light.
Yes, adding Historic would be great, also lighting is definetly needed for this sign. Thanks to whoever planted the flowers around the sign. They looked great this summer. I have been working with the SFX Teen Share when I have time cutting the grass at Market Square, Judge Burd and Black Rock parks and want to thank Gina Ashley and Joshua Fox who did a lot of mowing last weekend. The parks at the corner of Amherst and Niagara are in need of benches and Tables. What do you think of a Chess/Scrabble Park for our neighborhood? Buffalo doesn't have one and I've seen them in other cities.
Marsha Huard
The new community garden on Bailey either has these chess tables or are getting them installed.
I'm sure some people will come up with a bunch of negative excuses, but I personally think seeing benches, tables and residents on the square would be a totally positive thing. Would just take enough usage by the neighborhood to keep the gangs, dealers and problems out of the park.
This park is not a city park it is owned by the NHS thats why there is a billboard in this park. When was the last time you seen a billboard in a park? That being said the liability issues with putting in place any benches or the like is a problem thats why theres been a stoned area in the rear of the park since day one without any playground equipment. As far as keeping the bad element out of such areas as BR/R there has been a huge drop in large parts of both Neighborhoods due to the addition of the Buffalo Special Police working with the Buffalo Police Dept. on quality of life issues some times and some areas have been a virtual ghost town this summer. While we sleep at night these law enforcers are hard at work keeping our community safe and sound. There will be a post in the future pertaining to the BSPD and there ability to due more for our community if you want them to and how we can help them help us.
I recently sent a letter to Paul Wolf, supporting Councilman Golombek's resolution allowing the Special Police to write tickets for Quality of Life violations. I agree that the Special Police ARE making a large impact in Black Rock/Riverside and I'm looking forward to the day when they have even more officers and can extend the areas they patrol and the hours of their patrols.
Some of the more troubled areas of BR/R have quieted down a bit, but I'm seeing some of those problems just moving down into other areas of our neighborhoods.

Wasn't there a historical marker somewhere on the corner?
I seem to remember one - a blue and gold one - that told the history of the "black rock."
Hey Marsha, any relation to Jerry and Keith Huard?
