It's History

The Appellate court upheld a State Supreme Court ruling to allow the Demolition by Neglect of the Atwater House as Mr Pano has let the building rot. This is proof that nothing is safe anywhere in the city that is not located in a historic district. Black Rock could benefit from this designation as we are rich in historic buildings and parks. One such park that was apart of the "Rock" since 1830 and lost was "Porter Square" located at 1733 Niagara St opposite from the entrance to Squaw island park. James Gianni said if he could not obtain the park to build a warehouse he would have to move his company out of the city the park was listed on the upcoming 2003 city auction under a false address one day before the auction John Hannon, Real Estate Division Head for the city of Buffalo brokered a back door deal to sell the park to Gianni for the sum of $16,000 Gianni just sold the park for $185,000. Who got the shit end of the stick the people in this community did. Fix Buffalo has a question that needs to be answered. Check out these pictures of 97 Dodge street this house is also marked for demo where is the petition to stop this gem from going to the land fill?

I'm not familiar with the history of Porter Square, thanks for the story. Is there a warehouse there now?
Who bought the park from Gianni?

Black Rock definitely needs to be recognized as an historic district. Perhaps then people will value what is still here. I believe that once an area has historic district designation, there are incentives for restoring historic structures.

There is no warehouse there now it is all overgrown just like it was the day the city sold it to him. The new owner is E-Ville Holdings Llc. they don't show to own any other property in the city Jimi Gianni moved his business and his money out of Niagara St.

The sad truth of why the armchair preservationists do not get all worked up over demolitions (by neglect) of great buildings on the East side, or in other areas is that they don't care about those areas. They don't ever go into those neighborhoods, either because of racism or fear. Our mainstream media does such a good job of promoting fear, reporting only negative stories in certain areas of the city. Why aren't they reporting on the positve efforts of community activists?
It's not about the buildings, really. If it were, preservationists would be all over the East side and Black Rock. It's about the people who live in these areas and what the generally held perception of who they are and what they are like that matters. This is why bloggers and community activists are so vitally important to changing opinions about maligned neighborhoods. We live here, we know that it's not all bad news.
I know that there are activists and preservationists who do care about BR. There used to be architectural tours of BR. That needs to be brought back. It brings people who do not normally come into the area see great architecture, meet great people, care. The Garden Walk is also important for this reason.
While it takes time to change long-held perceptions, it isn't impossible. Good P.R. can do a lot. Look at the story of the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in Cinncinati, Ohio. The origins of that neighborhood sound a lot like Black Rock.
It's making a big comeback right now. Here is Steel's article in Buffalo Rising about OTR.

I love the business owner across the street from the Atwater House "Ya it's good to see it gone it was an eyesore with the broken and boarded up windows. Um that is property neglect by the owner you can make any property an eyesore by boarding up the windows and not keeping the place up to prove your point i guess he proved his point now he can get his parking lot and put up his tent.
